Giovanni’s Current October 2026 Lineup

Giovanni’s current Team GO Rocket team opens with Shadow Persian, uses one of Shadow Rhyperior, Shadow Machamp, or Shadow Kangaskhan in the middle slot, and finishes with Shadow Zekrom. Defeating him gives you the opportunity to rescue Shadow Zekrom during the current rotation.

That lineup is different from older guides that still list Nidoking, Kingdra, or previous Shadow Legendary rewards. Because Giovanni changes with Team GO Rocket events, always verify the lineup before spending Stardust or Elite TMs specifically for this battle.

Current three-phase structure

  • Phase 1: Shadow Persian
  • Phase 2: Shadow Rhyperior, Shadow Machamp, or Shadow Kangaskhan
  • Phase 3: Shadow Zekrom

A strong all-purpose core is Lucario + Mewtwo + Rhyperior. Lucario handles Persian and can continue into Kangaskhan or Rhyperior, Mewtwo covers Machamp, and Rhyperior gives you a safer Ground-based answer to Zekrom.

The Rocket NPC Stun Mechanic

Team GO Rocket NPC battles do not behave exactly like normal PvP. After a Charged Attack or a Pokémon switch, the NPC briefly pauses before resuming Fast Attacks.

That pause is approximately two seconds, or four turns under the current Trainer Battle mechanics. The pause occurs after a Charged Attack even if it is blocked by a Protect Shield, and it also occurs when Pokémon switch in after the initial lead.

Why the pause matters

Two seconds is enough to generate meaningful energy with a fast energy-generating Fast Attack. If your Charged Move is cheap, you can repeatedly create short windows where Giovanni is not dealing damage.

That is why “spammy” moves are so effective in Rocket battles. The goal is not merely to deal maximum damage per Charged Attack; it is to control the tempo of the fight.

The immediate-switch opening

One advanced tactic is to place your true Persian counter in slot two rather than slot one. Start the battle with another Pokémon, then switch immediately into your Fighting-type counter.

Giovanni pauses after the switch. Your Fighting type gets a free energy head start before Persian resumes attacking.

This can be the difference between firing the first Power-Up Punch comfortably and losing too much HP before your shield-breaking cycle begins.

Phase 1: Breaking Persian’s Shields

Shadow Persian is Normal-type, so Fighting is the key offensive answer. Giovanni also tends to use his two Protect Shields on the first two Charged Attacks you throw.

Your objective is therefore not “hit Persian with the strongest move possible.” Your objective is “reach two Charged Attacks quickly while surviving Persian’s Fast Move pressure.”

Lucario: The Best General Lead

Lucario is one of the cleanest answers because it can combine a Fighting Fast Move with Power-Up Punch. Power-Up Punch is cheap, forces shields, and boosts Lucario’s Attack while you are already exploiting Rocket AI pauses.

A current practical Lucario setup is:

  • Fast Move: Force Palm
  • Charged Move 1: Power-Up Punch
  • Charged Move 2: Aura Sphere

Use Power-Up Punch for the first two shielded Charged Attacks. Once Giovanni’s shields are gone, you can use Aura Sphere when the extra damage matters.

Why Power-Up Punch is better than opening with Aura Sphere

Aura Sphere hits much harder, but Giovanni shields your first two Charged Attacks anyway. Spending more energy on a shielded nuke wastes the main advantage of the matchup.

Power-Up Punch costs less energy and improves Lucario’s Attack. You gain shield pressure, stat momentum, and more Rocket pause windows at the same time.

Alternatives to Lucario

You do not need Lucario to win. The correct replacement is another Fighting attacker with a reasonably fast Charged Move cycle.

Useful alternatives include:

  • Machamp with Karate Chop and Cross Chop
  • Terrakion with Double Kick and Sacred Sword
  • Conkeldurr with Counter and Dynamic Punch
  • Resolute Keldeo with Low Kick and Secret Sword

The exact best choice depends on what you already have powered up. A levelled Machamp with the right moves is better than an underpowered Lucario built only because a guide called it “best.”

Persian Fast Moves Can Change the Feel of the Battle

Do not judge your team after one attempt. Different Fast Move combinations can make the same Giovanni lineup feel dramatically harder.

If Persian is deleting your lead before you can build energy, re-enter with a Pokémon that resists or better tolerates that Fast Move. The battle does not consume your team permanently, so scouting one attempt is often worthwhile.

Phase 2: Shadow Rhyperior

Shadow Rhyperior is Rock/Ground, which gives it especially severe weaknesses to Water and Grass. In Pokémon GO terms, those attacks exploit both of its types and are the fastest way to remove it.

It is also weak to Fighting, Ground, Ice, and Steel. That means Lucario may be able to continue from Persian if it still has enough HP and energy.

Best Rhyperior counters

Strong options include:

  • Swampert: Mud Shot + Hydro Cannon
  • Kyogre: Waterfall + Origin Pulse
  • Sceptile: Bullet Seed + a strong Grass Charged Move
  • Kartana: Razor Leaf + Leaf Blade
  • Poliwrath: Bubble + Scald or Dynamic Punch
  • Mamoswine: Powder Snow + Icicle Spear

Swampert is particularly efficient because Mud Shot generates energy quickly and Hydro Cannon is cheap. That lets you continue abusing the Rocket pause mechanic instead of taking repeated Fast Moves.

When to keep Lucario in

If Lucario exits Persian with boosted Attack and useful HP, keeping it in can be efficient. Fighting damage is super effective against Rhyperior, and you may already have Charged Move energy stored.

Do not force the matchup if Lucario is nearly fainted. Swapping to Swampert or another hard counter preserves Lucario for a possible Kangaskhan rematch strategy and reduces potion costs.

Phase 2: Shadow Machamp

Shadow Machamp is Fighting-type. Its primary weaknesses are Psychic, Flying, and Fairy.

This is the middle-slot outcome where Lucario is least comfortable. A dedicated Psychic counter makes the overall Giovanni team much more consistent.

Mewtwo for Machamp

Mewtwo is a natural answer because it can combine Psycho Cut with Psystrike. Psycho Cut generates energy rapidly, while Psystrike delivers powerful Psychic damage.

The speed of that cycle also synergizes with the NPC pause mechanic. Each Charged Attack buys another brief window to build the next one.

Other Machamp answers

If you do not have Mewtwo, consider:

  • Metagross with Psychic coverage
  • strong Flying-type attackers
  • durable Fairy-type attackers
  • other high-level Psychic Pokémon with efficient Charged Moves

Avoid bringing a counter that is technically super effective but too frail to survive Shadow Fast Move damage. Rocket Pokémon can hit much harder than normal wild encounters.

Phase 2: Shadow Kangaskhan

Shadow Kangaskhan is Normal-type, so Fighting is the direct answer. This is the best-case middle slot for a Lucario that survives Persian.

If Lucario still has energy after removing Persian, you can often maintain pressure immediately. Power-Up Punch boosts can make the transition even easier.

Kangaskhan counters

Useful options include:

  • Lucario
  • Machamp
  • Terrakion
  • Conkeldurr
  • Resolute Keldeo

The main risk is simply running out of HP after the Persian fight. If Lucario is too low, switch before Kangaskhan’s Fast Move pressure finishes it and wastes your stored team coverage.

Phase 3: Shadow Zekrom

Shadow Zekrom is Dragon/Electric. It is weak to Dragon, Fairy, Ground, and Ice attacks in Pokémon GO.

Dragon counters can produce excellent damage, but they can also take dangerous Dragon damage back. For a Giovanni battle, where consistency matters more than raid-style peak DPS, a strong Ground option is often safer.

Rhyperior as the Safe Zekrom Answer

Rhyperior with a Ground Fast Move is a strong general finisher. It can apply super-effective Ground pressure without exposing itself to the same Dragon-on-Dragon punishment that a Dragon attacker may face.

A current recommended shell is:

  • Fast Move: Mud-Slap
  • Charged Move: Breaking Swipe or another efficient option depending on availability

The exact moves you choose should reflect the version of the move pool available on your account. If you have a stronger Ground Charged Move that reaches in time, use the actual battle outcome rather than copying a theoretical set blindly.

Other Shadow Zekrom counters

Powerful options include:

  • Therian Landorus with Ground damage
  • Excadrill with Ground moves
  • Garchomp with Ground or Dragon pressure
  • Black Kyurem with Ice/Dragon pressure
  • strong Fairy attackers
  • strong Ice attackers

Ground is especially attractive because it targets Zekrom’s Electric typing without creating a Dragon mirror. Ice and Fairy are useful when your best Ground attackers are underlevelled.

Do Not Confuse Giovanni With a Raid

This battle is not a 5-Star raid damage race. You are fighting an NPC with two shields, scaled Shadow Pokémon, switch pauses, and a three-Pokémon roster.

A counter with slightly lower raw DPS can be better if it reaches Charged Moves faster, survives longer, or creates more Rocket stun windows. PvE raid rankings should not be copied directly into Rocket strategy without adjustment.

Shield Management

Giovanni uses two Protect Shields. Your plan should assume the first two Charged Attacks will be blocked.

That is why the first phase should use a low-energy move. Once the shields are removed, your high-damage Charged Moves become much more valuable.

Your own shields

Do not automatically spend both of your shields on Persian. Preserve at least one when possible for the middle slot or Zekrom.

If your Lucario can survive a Charged Attack and still finish Persian, taking the hit may be better than spending the shield you need to protect Rhyperior from a dangerous Zekrom move later.

Energy Carryover Between Phases

One of the strongest Rocket tactics is finishing an opposing Pokémon with Fast Moves when it is safe to do so. That lets you carry Charged Move energy into the next phase.

For example, if Persian is almost fainted and Giovanni’s shields are already gone, you may not need another Power-Up Punch. Finish with Fast Moves and enter the middle matchup with energy ready.

That stored energy creates immediate pressure. Giovanni’s next Pokémon also pauses briefly after entering, giving you another opportunity to reach a Charged Attack before taking full damage.

Switching as a Defensive Tool

Switching is not only about type advantage. It is also a way to interrupt incoming damage and reset the matchup.

If a Pokémon is about to faint while holding no useful energy, switch to the counter that can exploit the next pause. The two-second window can effectively function like temporary damage prevention.

Do not switch randomly, though. The switch timer limits how often you can do this, so every swap should solve a matchup or preserve an important counter.

A Reliable Battle Sequence

A practical sequence for the October 2026 lineup is:

  1. Start with a non-Lucario Pokémon if you want to exploit the immediate-switch pause.
  2. Switch instantly to Lucario.
  3. Build to Power-Up Punch and use it.
  4. Continue Fast Moves during the post-Charged-Move pause.
  5. Use a second Power-Up Punch to remove Giovanni’s second shield.
  6. Finish Persian while preserving as much energy as practical.
  7. If the middle slot is Rhyperior or Kangaskhan, continue with Lucario if healthy.
  8. If the middle slot is Machamp, move to Mewtwo.
  9. Preserve your Ground finisher for Shadow Zekrom.
  10. Use the switch and Charged Attack pauses to minimize incoming Fast Move damage.

This plan covers every current middle-slot possibility without needing to rebuild the team after each failed attempt.

Healing and Revive Management

Giovanni battles can consume a surprising number of potions when you repeatedly test bad matchups. The easiest way to save items is to treat the first attempt as scouting rather than brute force.

If your first team loses, record which middle Pokémon appeared and what Fast Moves felt dangerous. Re-enter with a targeted lineup instead of repeatedly using the same failing team.

Reduce item use with bulk and resistance

A counter that resists the opponent’s Fast Move often saves more healing items than a glass-cannon counter with higher DPS. That matters when your bag is low on Max Potions or Revives.

Lucario, Mewtwo, and Rhyperior work well as a core because each has a specific job. You are not asking one Pokémon to survive every phase.

Do not revive everything after every attempt

Only heal the three Pokémon you are actually taking into the next battle. There is no reason to spend Revives on unrelated fainted raid attackers while troubleshooting Giovanni.

If a counter is clearly wrong for the current Fast Move combination, leave it fainted until after you finish the Rocket encounter.

Giovanni Rewards

The current Giovanni battle awards 5,000 Stardust plus random item bundles after victory. Current reward bundles can include Revives, Max Revives, Hyper Potions, Max Potions, or a Unova Stone.

The headline reward is the Shadow Legendary encounter. During the current October 2026 rotation, that encounter is Shadow Zekrom.

Giovanni does not give a Strange Egg as the standard reward. Strange Eggs are associated with defeating Rocket Leaders rather than the Team GO Rocket Boss.

Shadow Zekrom Catch Preparation

Before starting the encounter, make sure you have enough item space and understand that Shadow Legendary encounters are valuable long-term investments. Do not rush purification decisions.

Shadow Pokémon gain offensive power at the cost of taking more damage. Whether to keep a Shadow Legendary depends on its role, IVs, resources, and the current raid or PvP meta.

For Shadow Zekrom specifically, its Dragon/Electric typing gives it major offensive value. Evaluate it before spending expensive resources.

Common Giovanni Mistakes

Mistake 1: opening with your hardest-hitting Charged Move

Giovanni shields it. You spent more energy for no benefit.

Use a cheap move first and remove his shields quickly.

Mistake 2: ignoring the NPC pause

If you resume tapping slowly after a Charged Move or switch, you waste free turns. Use the pause to generate as much energy as possible.

Mistake 3: bringing one team from an old guide

Giovanni rotates. An article that was correct three months ago may now tell you to prepare for the wrong Shadow Legendary.

Mistake 4: using Dragon against Zekrom without checking its moves

Dragon can hit Zekrom super effectively, but Zekrom can return super-effective Dragon damage. Ground often gives a safer path.

Mistake 5: wasting both shields on Persian

Persian is only phase one. Keep enough defensive resources for the middle slot and Shadow Zekrom.

Budget Team Options

You do not need a team full of Legendaries or Mega Pokémon. A practical lower-cost lineup can still exploit the same mechanics.

Consider:

  • Machamp as the Persian and Kangaskhan answer
  • Swampert for Rhyperior
  • a strong accessible Psychic or Flying attacker for Machamp
  • Excadrill or another Ground attacker for Zekrom

Move quality and battle timing matter enormously. A well-built budget counter with the correct moves can outperform a high-CP Pokémon with a poor moveset.

Final October 2026 Checklist

Before tapping Battle, verify:

  • Persian counter: Fighting type with a fast Charged Move
  • Shield plan: two cheap Charged Attacks early
  • Rhyperior answer: Water or Grass preferred
  • Machamp answer: Psychic, Flying, or Fairy
  • Kangaskhan answer: Fighting
  • Zekrom answer: Ground, Ice, Fairy, or Dragon
  • Switch tactic: exploit the NPC pause
  • Healing plan: only restore the three counters you will actually use

For the current rotation, Lucario + Mewtwo + Rhyperior is a highly practical all-purpose team. The logic is more important than the exact species: fast shield pressure, one middle-slot coverage answer, and a safe Zekrom finisher.

Update Notice

This guide is specifically updated for the Team GO Rocket rotation active in October 2026. Giovanni’s lineup changes after Rocket events, so the current Shadow Legendary and middle-slot pool should be rechecked whenever a new Taken Over event begins.

The universal mechanics remain useful even after the roster changes. Cheap shield baiting, the roughly two-second NPC pause after Charged Attacks and switches, energy carryover, and matchup-specific counters are the core tools that make Giovanni consistently beatable.
